Kapit, Sarawak - National Secondary School (SMK) Selirik here has made its own history by having a STEM Hub Room.

The STEM Hub Room is the first of its kind to be established in SMK Selirik and it is the only one of its kind in Malaysia.

State Assemblyman (ADUN) for Pelagus, YB Wilson Nyabong Ijang, officially inaugurated the STEM Hub Room on Thursday.

He expressed his joy because SMK Selirik was chosen as the first school in the country to implement this pioneering project.

"This project aligns well with the Sarawak government's emphasis on innovation and self-skills development like this.

The selection of SMK Selirik demonstrates the confidence and trust of the authorities in the teachers, staff, and facilities at SMK Selirik," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Project, Dr. Khong Yoon Long, said the purpose of launching the program and the STEM Hub Room is to promote innovation, especially among students.

"Innovation is divided into two aspects, which are learning or knowledge and equipment. Innovation is changing rapidly. Therefore, young people, especially students, need to have skills and constantly improve themselves," he said.

The purpose of the STEM Hub Room is to inspire and bring technology to education centres that may not normally have access to modern technology. The STEM Hub Room boasts a variety of science, engineering and robotics apparatus that is designed to be accessible and utilised by students and teachers alike. 

YB Wilson Nyabong Ijang was gifted a personalised wood engraving that Dr. Khong performed on the spot for the esteemed minister. 

Dr. Khong brought in and set up the STEM Hub Room all the way from Kedah on the western peninsular. He is the director of Powersains, a STEM education and e-learning initiative aiming to enhance technology in the classroom and empower young minds to engineer the future.
