Fresh Burst of Energy With Pedal Penang Kia (PPK) Cycling Club

Penang’s cycling scene is getting a fresh burst of energy thanks to the Pedal Penang Kia (PPK) Club, a spirited group that’s rapidly becoming a cornerstone of the state’s pedal-powered revolution.

⚡ Who is PPK?

Founded by local cycling enthusiasts, PPK has quickly built momentum with its weekly Saturday rides—free, inclusive events open to all, from casual riders to seasoned cyclists. Led by Captain Hubert and Tai Hong, these rides—which often begin at Gurney Drive with a pit-stop at Queensbay and Balik Pulau —focus on camaraderie, scenic routes, and a healthy dose of Penang culture.

? Championing Cycling Culture

PPK isn’t just about getting fit—it’s part of a wider wave transforming Penang into Malaysia’s first “cycling state”. The club supports city-wide initiatives, echoing the state government's efforts in rolling out green lanes and safer bike routes. Riding alongside iconic measures like Bike‑on‑Friday and dedicated coastal cycle paths from George Town to Queensbay, PPK rides give everyday cyclists a practical and social gateway to Penang’s evolving cycling infrastructure.

? Club Kit & Identity

More than just riders, PPK is building an identity. Their first official club jersey, designed for comfort and performance, sports UPF 50+ UV protection, an aerodynamic fit, and sleek graphics that embody Penang’s spirit. Orders have already flown off the shelves—signaling strength in branding and member pride.

? Routes, Rides & Rendezvous

PPK’s rides don’t just cover distance—they explore heritage, hills, and hidden gems:

  • Scenic coastal loops, tracing Gurney Drive, Esplanade, and Armenian Street together with local bike groups like Glory Riders

  • Village explorations in Balik Pulau, supported by bike-friendly cafes like Spedahub

  • Optional hill climbs, like Tun Sardon, challenge riders and promote fitness within the SLM and Howei group.

By mixing heritage routes, food stops, and social check‑ins (the “makan stops”), PPK connects cycling with the very fabric of Penang life.

Apart from regular rides, PPK has recently started organising competitive ride events. After a test run in April, PPK have officially launched the official Penang Duathlon and Time Trial in July 2025.

? Building a Movement

What sets PPK apart:

  • No fee to join, lowering barriers and welcoming newcomers.

  • Performance cycling training and race-oriented riding for competitive events across Malaysia and the world.

  • WhatsApp & Strava channels, enabling tight-knit communication and community-building.

  • Inclusivity across ages and experiences, just showing up and pedaling is enough.

These are the hallmarks of a grassroots cycling movement right here in Penang.

? Penang: A Cycling Renaissance

PPK is riding the wave of several pro-cycling developments in Penang:

  • A 12.5 km coastal bike lane that links George Town and Queensbay, aiming to expand island-wide.

  • City council measures include back‑lane pathways, cyclist crossing lights, and green-box bike zones.

  • Monthly and ad-hoc car-free or “Fun-Cycling” days boost interest and safe-space cycling.

PPK is vitally connecting citizens to these initiatives, turning policy into on-the-ground experience.

? Why It Matters

  1. Health & fitness – regular rides promote wellbeing.

  2. Environmental impact – less motor traffic, cleaner air.

  3. Community cohesion – weekly get‑togethers spark bonds across backgrounds.

  4. Tourism & culture – heritage routes highlight Penang’s living history, building a cycling-friendly brand.

? What’s Next for PPK?

  • Continued expansion of club rides and jersey drops (future PPK-branded gear incoming)

  • As cycle infrastructure improves, expect more varied routes, including inner-city lanes or dedicated routes into rural zones.

  • Potential partnerships with government bodies to integrate cycling awareness and education into schools and events.

? Final Pedal: A Bright Horizon

Pedal Penang Kia is no ordinary cycling club—it’s a vibrant, community-powered engine in Penang’s push to become Malaysia’s premier cycling state. Through welcoming rides, stylish identity, and active participation in the broader cycling environment, PPK personifies how grassroots enthusiasm fuels lasting societal change.
