Cyclist dies in crash with car during Langkawi Legendary Ride event

LANGKAWI – A participant of the Langkawi Legendary Ride (LLR) cycling event was killed this morning after being run over by an incoming car during the race.
The victim, 28-year-old Low Beng Seng, suffered fatal head injuries in the 8:30am incident along Jalan Kuala Muda, not far from the Langkawi International Airport. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr. Low is pictured on the far left right before the ride started.
Langkawi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shariman Ashari said preliminary investigations revealed that Low, who was competing in the 68km Eagle Ride category, lost control while trying to avoid hitting other cyclists.
“He veered into the opposite lane and crashed into an oncoming vehicle. The victim died instantly from severe head injuries,” Shariman said in a statement.

The body has been sent to Sultanah Maliha Hospital’s Forensic Unit for post-mortem examination.
Two other cyclists were injured in the accident, with one being treated at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi. However, the victims are well and in stable conditions.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
This year’s fifth edition of the Langkawi Legendary Ride attracted about 1,200 local and international cyclists across three categories — the 101km Legendary Ride, the 68km Eagle Ride, and the 30km Mahsuri Ride.
